Sutil’s F1 career started in 2007 with Spyker, and he remained with the team through its transition to Force India. Prior to his Formula One debut, Sutil was praised by Lewis Hamilton, a future world champion and his former Formula Three teammate, who acknowledged Sutil’s significant influence during their time together. “He’s a really good driver who taught me a lot when we were together.”

In 2009, Sutil achieved a notable front-row start at the 2009 Italian Grand Prix, where he finished fourth, and went on to enjoy two impressive seasons in 2010 and 2011. However, his career faced a setback in 2012 following an incident in a Shanghai nightclub involving Lotus F1 director Eric Lux, which led to a conviction for grievous bodily harm and a suspended prison sentence, sidelining him for the season. Nico Hülkenberg replaced him at Force India during this period.

In 2013, with Hülkenberg moving to Sauber, Sutil returned to Force India and led the 2013 Australian Grand Prix in his comeback race. At the season’s end, Sutil and Hülkenberg traded places, but Sutil struggled with Sauber’s underperforming C33 car in 2014, failing to earn any points. Despite claiming to have a contract for 2015, Sauber chose to replace him. Subsequently, Sutil joined Williams as a reserve driver but left after one season, announcing his departure from the team in 2016.
