Emilio Giuseppe Farina, better known as “Nino” Farina, was born on 30 October 1906 and died on 30 June 1966. He was an Italian driver who made F1 history by becoming the first-ever Formula 1 World Champion in 1950.

Alongside becoming the first F1 Drivers’ Champion, Giuseppe Farina was also the winner of the very first World Championship Grand Prix at Silverstone, the 1950 British Grand Prix. In the inaugural Formula 1 season of 1950, Farina’s drives at the Swiss and Italian Grands Prix were instrumental in helping secure the first-ever Formula 1 World Championship, driving for the dominant Alfa Romeo team.

Despite continuing to race for Alfa Romeo the following season and a fourth-place finish in the 1951 championship, Farina would leave the team to join Ferrari for the 1952 season. His time at Ferrari brought more success, as he finished second in the 1952 Drivers’ Championship behind his fellow countryman Alberto Ascari.

In 1953, Farina claimed his final Grand Prix win at the challenging German Grand Prix. Over the next two seasons, Farina raced in fewer championship races. However, he still secured a podium finish in Argentina, a fourth-place finish in Monaco, and a third-place finish in Belgium in 1955, securing him fifth place in the 1955 Drivers’ Championship standings.

The 1956 Indianapolis 500 was Farina’s final attempt to qualify for an F1 Championship round. Unfortunately, he didn’t post a quick enough time to line up on the starting grid.

Despite not achieving the same level of dominance as his peers like Alberto Ascari and Juan Manuel Fangio, Farina’s career in Formula 1 remains unforgettable. With five wins, five pole positions, and five fastest laps to his name, Farina’s record of becoming the first World Champion and Grand Prix winner in F1 history means that he will always be celebrated as a legendary figure in the sport.

After retiring, Farina sold Alfa Romeo’s and Jaguar’s and later supported operations at the Pininfarina factory. He died on 30 June 1966, aged 59, while en route to the 1966 French Grand Prix. Farina lost control of his Lotus Cortina in the Savoy Alps near Aiguebelle. He struck a telegraph pole and was killed instantly. Farina was travelling to watch the race and to participate in filming as an advisor and driving double for French actor Yves Montand, who portrayed a former World Champion in the film Grand Prix.
