Born on 29 June 1995, Latifi’s Formula One journey began with his debut in the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix. There, he began a three-season journey with the Williams team, securing nine championship points.
Before his stint with Williams, Nicholas Latifi served as a test and reserve driver for several Formula One teams, including Renault, Force India, and Williams.
Latifi’s career achievements before Formula One included a second-place finish in the 2019 Formula 2 Championship while racing for DAMS. This rewarded Latifi with a drive in the following 2020 F1 season for Williams.
After the 2022 season, Latifi left the Williams team, ending a three-season stint, and was succeeded by F2 graduate Logan Sargeant marking the end of his F1 career.
His most notable race, not for the most obvious reasons, came at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. On lap 53, a crash at turn 14 while fighting for position with Haas‘ Mick Schumacher brought out the safety car. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton led most of the race and appeared on course to win what would have been a record eighth World Drivers’ Championship, having taken the lead at the start of the race at turn 1 on the first lap. However, Verstappen was the eventual winner, overtaking Hamilton on the final lap after a controversial restart behind the safety car in the race’s last moments. Max Verstappen won the championship by eight points, and race director Michael Massi was eventually replaced after investigations concluded that the race officials had misapplied the regulations due to human error.
