Lando Norris bounced back from losing the lead at the start of the 2024 Dutch Grand Prix to secure a comfortable victory over Max Verstappen at Zandvoort.

Despite continuing his streak of poor starts—failing to maintain the lead from pole position for the sixth consecutive time—Norris overtook Red Bull’s Verstappen at the beginning of lap 18. From there, the McLaren driver pulled away to win by 22 seconds.

Norris’s victory and an extra point for setting the fastest lap narrowed Verstappen’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 70 points, with nine rounds left in the 2024 season.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc delivered a brilliant drive, moving up from sixth on the grid to hold off Norris’s McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, and secure the final podium spot. Leclerc’s teammate, Carlos Sainz, also impressed by climbing from 10th on the grid to beat Red Bull’s Sergio Perez for fifth place.

As a result, Red Bull’s lead in the Constructors’ Championship has been cut to 30 points over McLaren heading into next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix, with momentum now favouring the Woking-based team.

Verstappen seemed to be cruising towards a fourth consecutive drivers’ title after a dominant start to the season. However, his defeat at his home race for the first time in four appearances means he has now gone five races without a victory.

Norris, who had previously failed to convert two pole positions into wins earlier in the summer, finally claimed his second F1 victory. His commanding performance, bolstered by McLaren’s latest upgrades, has sparked hopes that the Briton could still mount a title challenge against Verstappen.

“It feels amazing,” Norris said. “I wouldn’t say it was a perfect race because of lap one again, but it was still beautiful. The pace was strong, and the car was unbelievable. I could push and get past Max. It was a straightforward race—tough but enjoyable.”

George Russell’s race was hampered by a slow pit stop, dropping him from fourth on the grid to finish seventh for Mercedes, while teammate Lewis Hamilton could only manage eighth after starting 14th due to a poor qualifying session.

Pierre Gasly maintained his ninth starting position, securing valuable points for Alpine, while Fernando Alonso finished tenth after slipping back from seventh in another disappointing outing for Aston Martin.
