Charles Leclerc secured a sensational victory at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix on Ferrari’s home turf, fending off Oscar Piastri. Lando Norris completed the podium in third place.

Leclerc’s win, his second of the season, came courtesy of a strategic one-stop approach that saw him finish 2.6 seconds ahead of Piastri. Despite starting as favourites with a front-row lockout, McLaren’s race strategy faced early challenges when Piastri overtook Norris on the first lap.

This left Norris trailing and unable to rejoin the battle for the lead, ultimately settling for third place. This result narrows his gap to Max Verstappen in the Drivers’ Championship to 62 points.

Carlos Sainz crossed the line in fourth, just ahead of Lewis Hamilton, while Verstappen managed to minimize his losses by finishing sixth, narrowly ahead of George Russell.

Sergio Perez took eighth place, helping Red Bull maintain their lead in the Constructors’ Championship, now just eight points ahead of McLaren with eight races remaining.

Rounding out the top ten were Williams’ Alex Albon in ninth and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen in tenth.

Leclerc claims thrilling victory

Starting from fourth on the grid, Charles Leclerc quickly moved up to second after the first lap when George Russell locked up at Turn One and Oscar Piastri made a surprising pass on Lando Norris at the second chicane.

Caught off guard by Piastri’s move, Norris lost momentum mid-corner, allowing Leclerc to capitalise on the situation.

Norris later managed to undercut Leclerc, putting McLaren back in a one-two position, but the team’s advantage was short-lived.

Opting for a one-stop strategy, Leclerc ultimately made the right call, securing his second career win at Monza to the joy of the Tifosi.

“It is an incredible feeling,” Leclerc said after the race. “I thought the second time, if there was a second time, would not feel as special as the first, but the emotions over the last few laps were the same. I want to win Monza and Monaco every year and I have managed to do it. It is so, so special.”
