This latest season of Drive to Survive will retrospectively explore Max Verstappen‘s and Red Bull‘s historic championship journey while also weaving in various storylines from the 2023 season.
The series will include spotlight moments from teams like Aston Martin and McLaren, Mercedes‘ ongoing efforts to reclaim their winning form, and Daniel Ricciardo‘s comeback with AlphaTauri.
Coinciding with the final day of pre-season testing in Bahrain on February 23, the show sets the stage for the 2024 season kickoff a week later at the same location. Since its 2019 inception, Drive to Survive has been instrumental in boosting Formula 1’s popularity, particularly attracting a younger and more diverse audience, with a significant growth in interest from the United States.
The production of the series remains under the stewardship of Box to Box Films. James Gay-Rees, celebrated for his work on the Academy Award-winning documentary Senna, maintains his role as Executive Producer. He is joined by Emmy-winning producer Paul Martin, known for his work on the 2019 documentary Diego Maradona.
Despite a less dramatic 2023 season compared to previous years, Gay-Rees believes the series still has ample potential for further exploration and storytelling within the world of Formula 1.
“We’ve all had the statistics about the changing, younger demographic, and it’s tough out there for anybody, for any big organisation, to hold its ground given the amount of choices that are out there for the consumer,” he said in a recent interview on F1.com.
“Bringing such a big new audience to a sport – which obviously was deserved, it just needed somebody to open it up – is massively satisfying.
“The fact that it wasn’t a fluke, the fact that it’s grown [with every season]… It’s a real honour and we love it. It’s a very difficult show to make, but we love the process, we love the world. Long may it continue!”
Drive to Survive, now featuring the collaboration of all ten F1 teams, overcame early hesitations from Ferrari and Mercedes. The fifth season, which focused on the 2022 season, was lauded for its departure from the series’ earlier habit of exaggerating snippets and quotes for dramatic impact, opting for a more authentic portrayal.
