1929
The first-ever Monaco Grand Prix saw a stunning victory for the only British driver in the field, William Grover-Williams, who piloted his Bugatti T35B to triumph, defying the favoured Mercedes contenders and the largely French-dominated grid.
The race was the brainchild of Anthony Noghès, a wealthy cigarette manufacturer who, alongside a group of friends, founded the Automobile Club de Monaco. His vision was backed by Prince Louis II and Monégasque racing star Louis Chiron.
A total of 16 invited drivers took to the streets of Monte Carlo to battle for a grand prize of 100,000 French francs, marking the beginning of what would become one of motorsport’s most iconic races.

1931
Born in Kingston-upon-Hull, Vic Wilson spent his teenage years in South Africa and began his racing career in Rhodesia. His unexpected break into Formula One came when Dick Gibson, recovering from a crash in his Cooper, suggested Wilson repair the car and take his place. This opportunity led to Wilson’s debut at the 1960 Italian Grand Prix, though he retired from the race.
After stepping away from racing between 1961 and 1963, Wilson returned in 1964 and competed for a full season in 1965. In 1966, he planned a full campaign with Team Chamaco Collect, driving a BRM car. However, after finishing a distant fourth at the non-championship Syracuse Grand Prix and briefly practicing at Spa, he was replaced, with Bob Bondurant becoming the team’s only driver.
1960
It was a difficult day for Stirling Moss, who was fined £50 and handed a 12-month driving ban by a Shropshire court after being found guilty of dangerous driving following an accident the previous year.
The ban posed a significant problem, as losing his UK licence meant he was ineligible to retain the international licence required to compete in Formula One. However, with assistance from the RAC, Moss managed to obtain a U.S. driving licence, allowing him to continue racing—though he remained unable to drive himself on British roads.
2002
Michael Schumacher celebrated his record-breaking 97th race for Ferrari with a dominant victory at the 2002 San Marino Grand Prix, extending his lead in the 2002 Drivers’ Championship to 14 points—a gap that would never be seriously challenged.
“I didn’t expect such domination,” Schumacher said. “‘It had been close in qualifying and I expected the race to be more difficult. It’s a special day for me and the history of Ferrari and I am proud of that.”
Meanwhile, Eddie Irvine once again found himself in the headlines—this time for receiving a one-finger salute from Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichelllo, who finished second, as he was being lapped. Barrichello, who finished second, was unimpressed with Irvine’s actions. “I was basically telling him to go to hell,” said Barrichello. “He let Ralf [Schumacher] by nice and easy and he could have done the same to me.”
Ralf Schumacher finished third for Williams. It was the first one-two finish of the season for Ferrari and the first one-two for the team at Imola since 1982.

2019
The 2019 Chinese Grand Prix marked the 16th running of the event as part of the Formula One World Championship and held special meaning as the 1000th World Championship race since the series began at Silverstone in 1950.
Lewis Hamilton secured victory, leading a Mercedes one-two ahead of teammate Valtteri Bottas, while Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel completed the podium in third.
This race would also be the last Chinese Grand Prix until 2024, as the 2020–2023 editions were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
