1954
Riccardo Patrese, a six-time Grand Prix winner, was born on this day in Padova. Over a 16-season career, he became one of Formula One’s most lasting figures, starting 256 races for five different teams—a record at the time of his retirement.
While he enjoyed success throughout his career, his most notable achievements came in the early 1990s with Williams. In 1992, he played a critical support role as the No. 2 driver to world champion Nigel Mansell during the team’s dominant season.
1983
Frenchman Alain Prost secured his second home win at the 1983 French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard, delivering a dominant performance for Renault. He cruised to victory ahead of Nelson Piquet, who battled his way up from sixth place, overtaking the second Renault of Eddie Cheever, who took third, to finish 29 seconds behind Prost.
Prost went on to win three more races that season, but a string of retirements in three of the final four rounds ultimately cost him the championship. Piquet and Brabham capitalised on Prost’s misfortune, clinching the title by just two points.

1994
Michael Schumacher claimed his second victory of the season at the 1994 Pacific Grand Prix in Aida, but the win was clouded by controversy amid growing speculation that Benetton was using an illegal traction-control system.
The race saw early drama when pole-sitter Ayrton Senna was taken out on the opening lap after a collision with Mika Häkkinen’s McLaren. Forced to retire, Senna spent the rest of the race watching from behind the barriers, carefully listening to the engine notes of Schumacher’s leading Benetton. Later, he confided in Lotus team boss Peter Collins, insisting he was certain the car was using traction control based on what he had heard trackside.
Austrian Gerhard Berger was second for Ferrari with another Brazilian, Rubens Barrichello, third in a Jordan-Hart, his and the Jordan team’s first podium finish.
Tragically, Senna lost his life in an accident at the following race in San Marino. Schumacher went on to dominate the season, securing his first World Championship.

2011
McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton claimed victory at the 2011 Chinese Grand Prix after starting from third on the grid, making F1 history as the first driver to win the race multiple times. Pole-sitter Sebastian Vettel finished second for Red Bull Racing, while his teammate Mark Webber put in an impressive recovery drive from 18th on the grid to secure third place.
Hamilton was thrilled with his performance, calling it “one of the best races I’ve experienced. It feels amazing to be able to bring home a victory for the guys in the factory.”
The race also saw a unique statistical record—Narain Karthikeyan finished 23rd for HRT, the lowest classified finishing position in Formula One history at the time. However, this record was soon broken five races later when Karthikeyan finished 24th at the 2011 European Grand Prix.
