1915

Ludwig Fischer was born in Straubing, Germany. He qualified for the 1952 German Grand Prix in a privately entered BMW but did not start the race despite placing 31st in qualifying, as all 32 entrants were considered qualified by the organizers. Fischer enjoyed a successful racing career throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, competing in German Formula 2, hillclimbing, and Formula Junior events.

1997

Fears arose of a potential boycott of the 1997 Italian Grand Prix by Formula 1 teams after manslaughter charges were filed against Frank Williams and five others regarding Ayrton Senna’s fatal accident in 1994. Flavio Briatore, head of Benetton, declared he would withdraw if any convictions occurred, stating, “Fatality is part of the game.” Jordan’s commercial manager noted, “As things stand, we couldn’t risk racing in Italy,” while FIA president Max Mosley referred to the situation as “a uniquely Italian problem requiring a uniquely Italian solution.”

2001

Toyota unveiled its Formula 1 car, the TF102 2002 at the teams headquarters in Köln, following one of the longest development phases in the sport’s history. Though eligible to compete in the 2001 season, the Japanese team opted to focus on preparations and testing instead. Toyota Motorsport president Ove Andersson emphasized teamwork over funding, saying, “Success is not a matter of money. It is about a good team working well together and getting everything right.” Despite competing in 140 Grands Prix between 2002 and 2009, Toyota failed to secure a victory before exiting the sport.
