Oscar Piastri secured his debut F1 Grand Prix victory in Hungary following intra-team drama at McLaren. Piastri’s teammate, Lando Norris, eventually complied with orders to hand back the lead to Piastri, who had lost it due to the team’s pit stop strategy.

At the start, Piastri, Norris, and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen went three abreast, with Piastri emerging as the leader into Turn 1. He maintained his lead for much of the race. However, during the second round of pit stops, Norris was pitted first to cover off Lewis Hamilton and emerged ahead of Piastri.

The team issued several calls for Norris to return the position to Piastri, which he was reluctant to follow for many laps. Finally, on Lap 68 of 70, Norris slowed down and allowed Piastri to pass.

The 23-year-old Piastri took the win, finishing two seconds ahead of Norris. Lewis Hamilton claimed the final podium position in third for Mercedes despite facing his own drama with Verstappen during a late-race battle.

Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, while Verstappen dropped to fifth and faced a stewards’ investigation for his incident with Hamilton. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished sixth, ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who made significant progress from his P16 starting position.

George Russell, starting from P17, crossed the line in P8. RB’s Yuki Tsunoda and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll completed the top ten.

Fernando Alonso finished just outside the points in P11 for Aston Martin, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo, who had a disappointing day after starting P9 on the grid.

Nico Hulkenberg took 13th place for Haas, with Alex Albon in 14th for Williams and Kevin Magnussen in 15th for Haas.

Kick Sauber’s Valtteri Bottas finished in P16, followed by Williams’ Logan Sargeant in P17.

Alpine’s tough weekend continued with Esteban Ocon in P18, and Kick Sauber’s Zhou Guanyu as the final classified runner in P19.

Pierre Gasly was the sole retiree, suffering a suspected hydraulic leak in his Alpine.
