The 2024 F1 season was contested over a record-breaking 24 Grand Prix weekends, starting in March and concluding in December.
Ten teams and 22 drivers competed for the coveted Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championship titles, with Max Verstappen defending the Drivers’ title alongside his team, Red Bull Racing, the 2023 Constructors’ Champions.
Season
The only change to the drivers’ lineup from the start of 2023 was Daniel Ricciardo taking over for Nyck de Vries at RB, the team previously known as AlphaTauri after he stepped in at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. Consequently, all driver and team pairings that participated in the final race of the previous season remained the same at the beginning of the 2024 season, marking a first in F1 history.
The first driver change of the season was at the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. British and Ferrari reserve driver Oliver Bearman made his F1 debut, replacing Carlos Sainz for one race after he suffered appendicitis and had an operation to remove his appendix. Bearman’s entry made him the youngest British F1 driver at the time, the youngest ever Ferrari driver at the time, the first English Ferrari driver since Nigel Mansell, and the first driver since Arturo Merzario, in 1972, to make his F1 debut in a Ferrari. He also beat Lewis Hamilton by becoming the first British driver in a Ferrari since Eddie Irvine in 1999.
Starting from the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, Williams announced that Franco Colapinto would race for the team during the remaining nine races of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship. He became the 49th Grand Prix driver for Williams Racing, the first Argentine driver in F1 in 23 years, and the second Argentine to race for the British team, following Carlos Reutemann. He replaced Logan Sargeant after a series of poor performances.
Another mid-season driver change was at round 18 after the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix; rumours circled the paddock that Liam Lawson would replace Daniel Ricciardo in the RB team. The following Thursday, 26 September, Lawson was confirmed with a full-time race seat alongside Yuki Tsunoda for the remaining six races of the 2024 season, effectively ending Riccardo’s F1 career.

2023 winner: Max Verstappen
The 2024 Formula 1 season brought its Americas triple-header to a close with the 2024 Sao Paulo Grand Prix at the iconic Interlagos circuit, officially named Autódromo José Carlos Pace. This Brazilian classic, known for its undulating turns, unpredictable weather, and passionate fans, provided the perfect stage for a thrilling showdown between Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship contenders. With the Sprint format in play, drivers and teams had two opportunities to battle for points. A format which could prove advantageous for McLaren’s Lando Norris, who was seeking to gain valuable points on championship leader and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen.
During Saturday’s Sprint race, Oscar Piastri allowed title-contending teammate Lando Norris to pass him for the Sprint win, securing a valuable extra point for Norris in his championship pursuit against Max Verstappen. Verstappen initially finished third after a late move on Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc but was later demoted to fourth following a five-second penalty imposed by the stewards for exceeding the speed limit behind Piastri under a Virtual Safety Car on the final lap.
On Sunday, Max Verstappen charged from 17th on the grid to clinch victory at the São Paulo Grand Prix, bringing him within reach of a fourth world title in one of his most remarkable performances. Lando Norris of McLaren endured a challenging race, finishing sixth after crucial mistakes, dropping 62 points behind Verstappen with only 86 left to fight for across the final three races. Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly rounded out the podium, revitalising Alpine’s season by propelling the team from ninth to sixth in the Constructors’ Championship. This chaotic, rain-soaked race—featuring a red flag, two safety cars, and numerous incidents—will be remembered not only as Verstappen’s 62nd career win but also as one of the greatest wet-weather victories in Formula 1 history.

2024 Formula 1 Standings
Points for the 2024 Formula 1 season are allocated to the top ten finishers, along with the driver clocking the fastest lap in the Grand Prix, provided they are among the top ten and to the top eight finishers in the Sprint Race.
The fastest lap bonus point would be discontinued at the end of 2024, with its removal from Formula 1 starting in the 2025 season following a decision by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council. During a meeting in October 2024, the council approved several updates to the Sporting and Technical regulations, including this change, while also planning adjustments for the 2026 rules.
To determine the Drivers’ Champion when there’s a tie in points, the tie-breaker involves comparing the number of Grand Prix victories each driver has. If they have the same number of wins, the number of second-place finishes is considered, followed by third places, and so on.
