2025 F1 World Championship

Season Summary

The 2025 F1 season would again be fought over 24 Grands Prix weekends as the championship celebrated its 75th anniversary. For the first time in many years, the season would start with the Australian Grand Prix between March 14 and March 16 and conclude with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix between December 5 and December 7.

Due to Ramadan throughout March 2025, the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix were scheduled for April.

The customary August summer break was set to continue, with a three-weekend hiatus separating the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring before the break and the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort afterwards.

Efforts to optimise the geographical order of races started in 2024 and were kept for 2025. The sequence began in March with Australia and China and then Japan in April, before moving through Europe over the summer, moving to the Americas in the fall and concluding with Qatar and Abu Dhabi hosting back-to-back races to end the season.

Season

The 2025 Formula 1 season would be the final year for the power unit configuration that debuted in 2014. A new configuration would be introduced in the 2026 F1 World Championship, eliminating the MGU-H but enhancing the MGU-K’s power output. In 2024, Max Verstappen was the defending Drivers’ Champion, and McLaren was the reigning Constructors’ Champion.

Also, 2025 would see the last car generation introduced in 2022 and the final season for the drag reduction system (DRS), first implemented in 2011 as an overtaking aid. From the 2026 F1 World Championship, the sport would adopt cars with active aerodynamics and movable wings.

F1 75 Live Event

In a historic event for F1, the world witnessed a glitzy launch at the London O2 Arena on 18 February to kick off the 75th season before fans, teams, and drivers would be getting ready for the cars to hit the track in Bahrain testing and the inevitable round-one race weekend down under in Australia.

F1 75 Live saw all 10 Formula 1 teams launch their 2025 liveries with the biggest draw, without a doubt, Lewis Hamilton making his first public appearance as the newest Ferrari driver after his sensational announcement 12 months earlier.

Teams

As the sister team to Red Bull Racing, RB would no longer use its initialism and would now compete under the name Racing Bulls, altering both its team and constructor identity.

The 2025 season would also be Renault‘s final year in Formula 1, as they would stop producing engines for their team, Alpine. The successful Mercedes team, who had powered McLaren to their 2024 title, would supply engines to Alpine from 2026 onwards.

Drivers

A huge driver change-up for 2025 began as the dominos fell through 2024, after Lewis Hamilton announced his Ferrari deal before the 2024 season had even begun.

After twelve seasons with Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton joined Ferrari, ending his record stretch of consecutive seasons with a single constructor and marking his first season racing without a Mercedes power unit. He took over the seat from Carlos Sainz, who, after four seasons, made a move to Williams on a multi-year contract. Sainz was initially set to replace Logan Sargeant; however, during the 2024 season, Franco Colapinto replaced Sargeant instead. Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes paved the way for Mercedes junior driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli, promoted from Formula 2, to fill his place.

Further down the grid, Haas sported a completely fresh driver lineup for the 2025 season. Nico Hülkenberg departed the team after a two-year stint to rejoin Sauber, where he last raced in 2013. His replacement at Haas was their reserve driver, Oliver Bearman, who was moving up from Formula 2 and had previously competed in the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix for Ferrari, as well as the 2024 Azerbaijan and São Paulo Grands Prix for Haas. Kevin Magnussen also left Haas after seven seasons split over two periods with the team. Esteban Ocon took his place, departing from Alpine after five years with Team Enstone, and whose seat was now be filled by Alpine’s reserve driver, Jack Doohan, who stepped in during the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Meanwhile, both Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu exited Sauber after three years, making room for the 2024 Formula 2 champion, Gabriel Bortoleto, to join Hülkenberg at Sauber.

Although Sergio Perez had initially signed a contract through 2026 with Red Bull, it was announced on 18 December 2024 that he would depart the team after four seasons, meaning Max Verstappen would have a new teammate for the 2025 season. The following day, 19 December, it was confirmed that Liam Lawson would join Verstappen at Red Bull for 2025. Perez would not feature on the grid in 2025.

Once Lawson was promoted to the main Red Bull team in mid-December following the departure of Sergio Perez, it was soon announced on 20 December that Isack Hadjar would fill the vacant seat at Racing Bulls alongside Yuki Tsunoda. Adding Hadjar’s name to the grid would bring the number of rookies in 2025 to five alongside Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber), Jack Doohan (Alpine), Oliver Bearman (Haas), and Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes).

2025 F1 Pre-Season Testing: Bahrain

For all F1 fans, the long winter wait was finally over: starting on 26 February, Bahrain’s Sakhir Circuit hosted the only official test session ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season. This was the first opportunity to see all ten new cars on track together before the season officially kicked off in Melbourne on March 14, when free practice would begin for the 2025 Australian Grand Prix—the first of yet another long 24-race season.

Over three days, teams would get 24 hours of running time, with sessions operating from 10:00 to 14:00 and 15:00 to 19:00 local time. While testing times should always be taken with a pinch of salt, the sessions would offer the first glimpse of what to expect in the upcoming 2025 season.

Based on pre-season testing in Bahrain, the general consensus among teams and paddock insiders was that McLaren entered the 2025 season as the team to beat. While Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri reported that the handling isn’t yet perfect, the raw pace of the MCL38 was evident, particularly in long-run simulations, where it showed superior tyre management.

Having seemingly addressed last season’s handling and balance issues, Red Bull appeared to be on the back foot but still competitive, closely matched with Mercedes. While Max Verstappen’s RB21 showed flashes of speed, Red Bull’s setup experimentation and Verstappen’s late spin suggested work was still needed. Meanwhile, Mercedes had a consistent test, with George Russell topping the final day’s timesheet. Their new car appeared to be an evolution rather than a radical departure, and while not the fastest, it looked well-balanced and reliable.

Despite their strong finish to 2024, Ferrari seemed to be the biggest unknown after switching from push-rod to pull-rod suspension—a move that left the Scuderia struggling to unlock performance fully. Lewis Hamilton’s first Ferrari test was solid but not spectacular, and while the SF-25 had potential, it may take time before it reached the consistency of its rivals ahead. Behind the top four, Alpine appeared to be best of the rest, with Williams also making strides. While Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon tried to downplay expectations, Williams’ balance and driveability suggested they could be genuine midfield contenders.

Haas and Racing Bulls seemed locked in a close fight with Williams, while Aston Martin and Sauber rounded out the order. Fernando Alonso hinted at improvements in driveability, but the AMR25 still looked unstable, particularly at the rear, leaving Aston Martin with a lot of ground to cover. Sauber appeared to be in the weakest position, struggling with downforce limitations and consistency, making them the early backmarkers heading into the season opener in Melbourne.

2025 Formula 1 Race Reports

Round 1: Australian Grand Prix

Race date: Sunday, 16 March, 2025
Race start time: 15:00 local time
Circuit: Albert Park
Laps: 58
Circuit length: 5.278km
2024 winner: Carlos Sainz

Formula 1 was back! After a three-month break, the 2025 season roared into life at Melbourne’s Albert Park, where the semi-permanent street circuit set the stage for an action-packed season opener. With a record-equalling 24 races spanning five continents, the journey from Australia to the season finale in December promised high-stakes battles, fresh rivalries, and plenty of storylines to follow. As the drivers and teams took to the track for the first time since last year’s 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, all eyes were on Max Verstappen retaining the Drivers’ title and McLaren the Constructors’ Championship.

Come race day, Lando Norris claimed his first victory of the 2025 season with McLaren in a dramatic, rain-soaked season opener, edging out the Red Bull of Verstappen in chaotic conditions. The McLaren driver now led the World Championship for the first time in his F1 career, but his native teammate Oscar Piastri could only manage ninth after a costly late spin while racing in second place at the time. With Piastri tumbling down the order, George Russell, running fourth place, took the third step on the podium for Mercedes. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton endured a challenging Ferrari debut, finishing 10th after the team’s risky switch to slick tyres in the damp conditions backfired.

The 2025 season had got off to a wet start, with a dramatic opener in Melbourne the weekend before setting the stage for an action-packed year ahead. Now, the paddock headed straight to Shanghai for the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix and the first Sprint weekend of the year. Lando Norris arrived with momentum after a statement victory, holding off Max Verstappen in the closing stages in Australia. With little time to reset, teams and drivers would quickly shift focus to the championship battle again as it began to take shape.

In Saturday’s Sprint, Lewis Hamilton delivered a masterclass in Shanghai to win the first Sprint of the season, his maiden victory for Ferrari. After securing a surprise pole in Friday’s Sprint Qualifying, the seven-time world champion held off Max Verstappen at the start and managed his tyres superbly over the 19-lap race to take the chequered flag. It was a landmark moment for both Hamilton and Ferrari — their first-ever Sprint win — and a stunning response to a disappointing debut weekend in Melbourne just one week earlier.

On Sunday, Oscar Piastri claimed a dominant victory at the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix, leading a McLaren one-two ahead of team-mate Lando Norris to bounce back from his Melbourne disappointment in style. The Australian controlled the race from pole, executing a clean one-stop strategy and holding off Norris, who managed a developing brake issue in the closing laps to secure second. George Russell completed the podium for Mercedes after briefly jumping Norris during the pit stops, but ultimately couldn’t match McLaren’s pace in a race that firmly established Piastri as a title contender.

2025 Formula 1 Standings

Points for the 2025 Formula 1 season are allocated to the top ten finishers in a Grand Prix and the top eight in the Sprint Race.

After the FIA abandoned the fastest lap points system at the end of the 2024 season, there would no longer be a single point for the driver clocking the fastest lap in the Grand Prix.

To determine the Drivers’ Champion when there’s a tie in points, the tie-breaker involves comparing the number of Grand Prix victories each driver has. If they have the same number of wins, the number of second-place finishes is considered, followed by third places, and so on.
